Welcome to brian maddox’s page

after spending over 20 years making my living ‘making things loud’, i’ve recently settled into a new calling as creative arts director at frederick christian fellowship church in lovely frederick, md. don’t worry, no one else has heard of frederick either. i still enjoy ruminating on all things audio, which is, i suppose, what I’ll be doing here. when i’m not geekin’ on tech stuff, i play some instruments and write music and that sort of thing. i also like cats. my wife does not . . . as much. today’s post is about ‘sibling rivalry’.  at least of a sort… everywhere i’ve gone i have noticed the chasm that exists between two worlds.  for the sake of brevity and alliteration i’ll call them ‘tech’ and ‘talent’.  if you’ve spent any time at all in any kind of performance endeavor, you know what i’m talking [...]

Church Audio: Clear as Mud…

today’s post concerns a bit of a pet peeve of mine.  i promise to try to keep my inner snark as under control as possible.  apologies in advance if i don’t achieve great success with that. what i want to talk about today is ‘how to communicate information regarding sound in a concise and intelligible [...]

okay, today’s post is gonna be short and [hopefully] sweet.  i wanted to talk about a mistake i see an awful lot of churches make with their sound systems.  simply put, i see an awful lot of systems whose components don’t ‘match’. i don’t mean color.  and i don’t mean something technical like ‘impedance’ or [...]

okay, i had an interesting morning this morning and it inspired me to post a little note… this sunday we were doing a special song ‘beauty from pain’ [by superchick].  my lovely and talented wife had prepared a video for this and so the band was playing ‘locked to video’ using a click track on [...]

by brian maddox June 24, 2010 Church Audio

in my last post i talked a little about the finer points of in-ear monitors. this time around we’re gonna get even finer.  [more fine?] there are a couple of inherent hazards in dealing with in-ear monitors.  one of them affects singers [and sometimes horn players], and can be a particularly pesky issue to deal [...]

In-Ear Monitors :The Fine Print

by brian maddox May 11, 2010 Church Audio

okay, in my last post i did a little overview of in-ear monitors.  what they are.  what they do.  all that neat stuff. so, now for more of the rest of the story… God created a truly remarkable sense when he gave us our hearing.  with only two ears we are able to hear completely [...]

In-ear Monitors: an Overview

by brian maddox April 23, 2010 Church Audio

okay, we’ve all seen them.  those ‘hearing-aid looking things’ that everybody on tv seems to be wearing.  so what’s the deal? well, if you’ve been on a stage before you know about monitors.  and you also know how loud and silly they can get.  guitar player plays too loud.  singer needs more level in his [...]

okay, this is the fourth in a series of posts that will cover a variety of church audio fundamentals. this stuff will really only appeal to our beloved tech folks.  but it wouldn’t be a bad idea for our ‘talent’ types to peruse this info as well.  who knows, might come in handy someday. so, [...]
