Worshipping Worship

I read a quote by Andy Park this week from his book, “To Know You More: Cultivating the Heart of a Worship Leader.” It struck me profoundly. It read:

“…If we get too caught up in how much of God’s presence we’re feeling, we’re missing the point of worship. Worship is first and foremost about giving glory to our matchless God and Savior, Jesus Christ.”

There is an emotional draw in worship. Music evokes emotion and stirs endorphins, and there is often a sense of euphoria that accompanies it. It feels good, but if we are not careful, the emotion of worship may become the draw, rather than the God we worship.

I believe that Andy is right. If we worship because of how it makes *us* feel, and if we load our worship sets with songs about what we want from God, or how God relates to *our experience* of worship, we are missing the point.

Worship is a response to God for Who He is, for what He has done and what he is going to do. It is because of Him. It is about Him. It is for Him.

Let us not worship worship, but rather let us worship Him alone!

“Great and marvelous are your deeds,
Lord God Almighty.
Just and true are your ways,
King of the ages.
Who will not fear you, O Lord,
and bring glory to your name?
For you alone are holy.
All nations will come
and worship before you,
for your righteous acts have been revealed.” Revelation 15:3-4

Running hard after Jesus,

Cathy

Well put, it is often hard to put together a worship set that doesn't include emotional favorites. But emotion can be evoked obviously from secular music as well; it's the burden of worship to communicate from the heart, in response to Him. Thanks

I’ve fallen into the trap of worshiping worship, because our church has all the bells and whistles (lights, big stage sets, energetic music, video, large screens, etc. ). It’s easy to get wrapped up in the production of it all. Thankfully our God is loving and gracious to us.

One of the names of God revealed in the Old Testament is Jehovah Shammah, meaning the Lord Whose presence is with us. One of the most enjoyable experiences of my life is to know His presence in worship. My life verse is Psalm 27…One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek, that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon His beauty…. And David’s first item of business when he became king was to go bring back the ark…why? because God’s presence was with the ark,,,,and God’s presence is His power to fight the enemy. Psalms calls the “secret place” our refuge. Psalm 91 is all about it. I tend to go into worship because I love Him, and because He’s so worthy, but many times, even in my private worship at home, I worship just because I love getting to dwell in His beautiful, amazing presence while I’m at it! :>) It’s refreshing, empowering,,,, He makes me new.
